NOVEMBER 2025 CALENDAR

UPDATES

Winter Weather Reminder: BCB’s Inclement Weather Policy
With our first brush of winter behind us, it’s a great time to review BCB’s inclement weather policy! Bluegrass Council of the Blind follows the Fayette County Public Schools schedule when it comes to weather closures. If FCPS is closed, BCB will also be closed.

During the winter months, we recommend calling ahead before coming in for any appointment, activity, or event to make sure everything is still a “go.” We’ll do our best to contact you directly with any updates or cancellations as they happen. Your safety and the safety of our staff is our priority. Stay warm, stay safe, and stay tuned to local weather updates!

Thanksgiving Holiday Closure
The BCB office will be closed on Thursday, November 27 in celebration of Thanksgiving. We hope your day is filled with gratitude, good food, and the warmth of friends and family!

Notice from ITN (Independent Transportation Network)
ITNBluegrass office will close at noon on Wednesday, November 26 and will not reopen until Monday December 1. All rides for November 26-December 1 should be scheduled by 3pm on November 24.

Blue Christmas at A Caring Place
Saturday, December 6, 2025 from 11 a.m.–1 p.m.
Beaumont Presbyterian Church, 1030 Lane Allen Rd.
A Caring Place will host its annual Blue Christmas ceremony, a comforting and reflective gathering for anyone who may be experiencing loss during the holiday season. Rooted in the traditions of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, Blue Christmas (also known as The Longest Night) honors the struggles many face with grief, darkness, and change at this time of year.

The ceremony provides a peaceful space to remember loved ones, pets, dreams, or abilities that have been lost, while focusing on the enduring promise of hope. Guests will experience moments of reflection, candle lighting, and soft music to encourage healing and peace.

Attendees are invited to share in a delicious luncheon catered by Sequel, complemented by a variety of potluck dishes contributed by the A Caring Place community. There will be uplifting entertainment from Lynn Ervin and her magical bell ringers, closing the day with joy, connection, and celebration of the light found in one another.

While this is not a BCB event, the spirit of Blue Christmas deeply resonates with many BCB clients and friends. Its message of comfort, remembrance, and shared hope reflects the compassion and community support that unite us all during the holiday season.

RSVP by calling 859-368-2656, or by emailing infor@a-caring-place.com .

BCB Communications and Relationship Building Quarterly Workshop

Time: 1:30 to 3 PM
Topic: Building stronger connections starts with better conversations, and that’s exactly what our next quarterly workshop is all about! In our first two sessions, participants learned sighted guide techniques and stepped into the shoes of someone with vision loss through hands-on simulation activities. Now, we’re taking the next step: opening up an honest, practical, and empowering dialogue about how to talk about vision loss with confidence and respect.
What’s okay to ask?
How can you better understand someone’s personal journey with sight impairment?
How do we break through awkward moments and turn them into opportunities for real connection?
Whether you are visually impaired, a family member, friend, caregiver or a professional, this workshop will give you tools and the confidence to create stronger, more inclusive relationships. Don’t miss this chance to join the conversation, ask questions, and walk away with a deeper understanding of how to support (and be supported!) in everyday life.

BCB has worked with the researchers so that the survey is accessible for those using screen readers. Please check it out. At this time, they are hoping to get more respondents to be sure the survey is comprehensive. Use this LINK to get started, and they ask that surveys are returned no later than October 1. Printed copies are also available and can be filled out and mailed in. Participants will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a $100 gift card! If you are reading this in print, the QR link to the survey follows this information:

BCB Communication and Relationship Building Series

Place: BCB Community Room

What does it really feel like to live with vision loss? How can friends, family, and professionals better understand the daily experiences and abilities of someone who is blind or visually impaired? Join us for the second session in our Communication & Relationship Building Series as we dive into these important questions in a fun and supportive setting.

Our interactive workshop is designed to bring people together, whether you have a vision impairment, are a close companion, a supportive friend, or a professional who wants to better connect with their community. We’ll be setting up a series of experience stations that give sighted participants the chance to explore the world through simulation goggles and blindfolds, navigating simple everyday activities from a whole new perspective.

This event isn’t just about understanding challenges, it’s about building confidence, connection, and communication. Throughout the session, we’ll explore practical ways to offer help, ask for assistance, and foster trust and independence in respectful, empowering ways. It’s a chance to learn, connect, and even share a few laughs as we break down misconceptions and build stronger relationships. Whether you come out of curiosity, compassion, or a desire to support someone in your life, you’ll leave with a greater appreciation for what’s possible and how we can all play a role in creating a more inclusive community. ITEMS OF NOTE
Mobile Market Update
The Mobile Market continues to be a popular part of our food distribution, with a marked growth in attendance over the past quarter. To alleviate overcrowding and allow enough time for everyone to shop, we now offer a “Drop-In” option on the SECOND TUESDAY of each month that will work differently than our usual third Wednesday Mobile Market. Changes of note for the Drop-In are:

  • Registering for your shopping date is still required and can be done by calling the BCB office at 859-259-1834.
  • The drop-in option is for those who either shop independently or those who bring someone to assist them; BCB Volunteers will not be available.
  • Clients will go directly to the Mobile Market trailer upon arrival, rather than checking in with BCB staff in the building, and return back to their vehicle once finished shopping.
  • There is no social hour or snacks, and our community room will not be open.
  • Wheels will not be an option for drop-in shoppers due to lack of space while waiting on your ride. This option is for those who have their own transportation or someone to drive them.

It is our hope that this additional date each month will make Mobile Market days more enjoyable and accessible for all.

Time: Noon until 2 (1-2 by Zoom)
Place: BCB Community Room, Suite 103
Speaker and Topic: Magdalena Felton, R.N., Non-24 Sleep/Wake Disorder
Join us for lunch followed by a presentation on Natural Circadian Rhythm and Non-24 Sleep/Wake Disorder. Our speaker, Magdalena (Maggie) Felton, a nurse practitioner with Vanda Pharmaceuticals, will return to provide an updated overview of this important topic. Maggie first presented on Non-24 three years ago and will share the latest research and treatment options available. Non-24 is a disorder that disrupts the natural sleep-wake cycle, often affecting individuals with little or no sight due to a lack of exposure to natural light, which plays a key role in regulating the circadian rhythm. Understanding the impact of natural light on sleep is vital for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, as it can help you better regulate your own sleep patterns.
In some cases, medication may be necessary to manage the condition. Maggie will offer practical guidelines on recognizing when it’s time to consult a healthcare professional and provide helpful tips on how to communicate effectively with your doctor.
Lunch will be generously provided by Vanda Pharmaceuticals. We look forward to seeing you there!
